Antycip Simulation showcases at ITEC 2010 a joint forces tactical UAV simulation demonstrator based on open COTS technologies

London, United Kingdom, 18 May 2010 – Antycip Simulation Ltd (Antycip Simulation), a subsidiary of ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) Pte Ltd, today presents at ITEC 2010 an innovative joint forces tactical UAV simulation demonstrator based on Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technologies.

The UAV simulation demonstrator is based on multiple open COTS tools provided by Antycip Simulation and its partners. At the heart of this demonstrator is VT MÄK’s (MÄK) VR-Forces simulation engine. VR-Forces is a powerful simulation software toolkit that allows the generation and execution of realistic battlefield scenarios. A leading Computer Generated Forces (CGF) software, VR-Forces includes essential features for tactical simulation including threat generation and behaviour modelling. Other COTS technologies used in this UAV simulation demonstrator include MyModels, MyBehaviour, VR-Vantage, VBS2, EXata, TerraTools and GL Studio.

“Our role in the market it to provide customers with innovative and open COTS products that can be easily used. This demonstrator shows that our tools can quickly be integrated into systems architectures. This demonstrator also highlights the scalability and level of openness of all the tools we provide and support in Europe.”

~ Alun EVANS,
Senior Technical Lead, Antycip Simulation

The joint forces tactical UAV simulation demonstrator includes:

  • Real time communications simulation using EXata: a detailed communications effects model including real-time communications, communications protocols, network propagation and signal transmission, degradation/loss of video transmission, network connection/nodes security.
  • Bespoke physics based models using MyModels UAV: for the simulation of the physical properties of the UAV, aerodynamics, propulsion and landing system. The simulation of high-level manoeuvers is directly accessible via the GUI, to support simulated reconnaissance, surveillance and control and use of the payload.
  • Doctrines modelling of the military resources using MyBehaviour: doctrine creation and scenario modelling to produce high-level form of automation without coding.
  • User friendly interface for control of the UAV using GL Studio: based on photorealism, GL Studio connects via HLA to the simulator to drive the on board camera, which gives a realistic operational interface which is also easily reconfigurable.
  • Realistic visuals using VBS2 and VR-Vantage: simulation of the UAV camera view using an OSG based viewer, and a first person view in VBS2.
  • Correlated terrains produced by TerraTools: correlated databases for many applications by design and not translation, this scenario is using exports for VR-Forces, VBS2, OpenFlight and OpenSceneGraph.
  • Scenario generation using VR-Forces and B-HAVE: the B-HAVE artificial intelligence module is used to analyse terrain topology, intelligently navigate through complex urban environments, automatically plan and follow paths through 3D building interiors, dynamically avoid collisions with obstacles or other entities, and flee from threats.
  • Architecture: This demonstrator is based on a distributed architecture using the HLA standard.
