A universal translator for distributed simulations VR-Exchange allows assets such as live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) simulations, C4I systems, and after-action-review systems to interoperate.

VR-Exchange is able to perform FOM-to-FOM translation, RTI-to-RTI bridging, DIS or HLA-to-TENA translation, and can support simulation-to-C4I interoperability, making it a true Interoperability Portal.

In addition VR-Exchange’s open architecture means that users can develop custom brokers for C4I protocols or other data standards. A documented interface (API) to the data exchange, is provided, as well as sample code that shows users how to read and write to, in the protocol independent data format.

The Need for Bridging

In some cases, bridging is necessary because it is not practical to get all parties to agree on a shared protocol, HLA FOM or RTI, or TENA LROM. In other cases, bridging is needed because a system architect wants to implement a hierarchical federation of federations design. Bridging is also often needed to support large-scale LVC (Live, Virtual and Constructive) integration, or to support Simulation-to-C4I interoperability.
